 The Gold Austrian Philharmonic
This month's coin in focus is the Gold Austrian Philharmonic produced by the Austrian Mint in Vienna.
The Austrian Mint is the world's oldest continuously operated mint.
During the Crusades Duke Leopold V of Babenberg had taken King Richard the Lionheart of England prisoner in Austria after an argument in the Holy Land. The need to create coin from the silver from part of the ransom paid for the king's release motivated the founding of the Austrian Mint in Vienna at the Babenberg Court around 1194.
In 1486 the Mint began the production of the "Guldiner", a silver coin that later came to be known as the
"Taler" which was the precursor of the "dollar."
In 1679 Mint-Master Mittermayr saved the staff of the mint and their families from the plague by walling up the mint and isolating its inhabitants from the rest of the plague-ridden city.
In 1989 the Austrian Mint PLC emerged from the main Republic Mint as an affiliated company of the Austrian National Bank. New management fostered an atmosphere of fresh impetus among enthusiastic employees.
The major success story of 1989 was the launching of the first European bullion coin to be struck in pure (999.9) gold. In order to ensure that the coin would be immediately recognized around the world as Austrian it was dedicated to the world famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. With its attractive design of musical instruments grouped to represent the orchestra, and the Golden Hall on the obverse where the Orchestra performs when in Vienna, the coin proved immediately popular and sold 419,000 ounces during the short three month launch period. Since its introduction, well over 3 million ounces have been sold worldwide.
